Steel can be approximately classified into isotropic material for its high strength of compression, extension and bending. Additionally, for the perfect ductility during the earthquake, steel structure can decrease the damage of an earthquake. And because if its elastic-plastic character, it can resist the distortion caused by a strong earthquake.
The full gravity load ratio between steel structure and reinforced concrete structure is about 1:1.5 under the same condition and the self-weight ratio of the two structures is 1:2. The great difference of loads leads to the different earthquake effects. Therefore, the steel structure can not only greatly decrease the damage if an earthquake but also lower the difficulty of foundation treatment. Consequently, the foundation cost of a project will be decreased.
In a common project, the cost of upper steel structure covers 15-20% of the whole project cost, which is higher than the reinforced concrete structure of the same type. But with the steel structure, the foundation cost can be decreased due to its light weight. As a result, the larger usage area and shorter construction period will make up the shortcoming and the integrated economic benefit will be increased.
